PDF to Word: what an editable conversion can—and can’t—do

Choose the right conversion for text documents, scanned pages and complicated layouts.

PDF and Word organize documents differently

A PDF describes where things appear on a page. A Word document contains editable paragraphs, sections and styles. Reconstructing a complex layout from PDF positions is a separate problem from extracting the text.

What this tool creates

PaperLumo extracts selectable text from the PDF and places it into editable DOCX paragraphs, separated into sections for each source page. It does not preserve the original fonts, images, tables or precise layout. Text columns may need manual reordering.

What about scanned PDFs?

A scan is an image of a page. If it has no searchable text layer, there is no text to extract. PaperLumo will report this instead of delivering an apparently successful blank conversion. OCR is required before such a document can become editable text.

Check your converted document

Read the DOCX after conversion and compare important names, numbers and paragraph order with the original. Rebuild tables and layout in Word where necessary. Keep the original PDF as the visual reference.
