Two ways to make a PDF smaller

Lossless mode rewrites the file’s internal structure and keeps everything you can see and use: selectable text, links and sharp lines. It suits PDFs exported from Word or other apps, and sometimes saves little because those files are already compact.

Image mode redraws every page as a JPEG picture at the quality you choose. It is meant for phone scans and photo-heavy PDFs, but text can no longer be selected or searched and forms and links stop working. If the result is not smaller than your file, you get the original back unchanged.

How to compress a PDF

  1. Choose your PDF and start with Lossless in Compression method. This keeps selectable text and does not turn pages into images.
  2. For a large scan, consider Image compression and review the Image quality setting. Image mode makes every output page an image and removes selectable text and interactive elements.
  3. Run Compress PDF, compare the output size and inspect small text before downloading. If compression produces a larger file, the original is returned.

A practical example

For a scanned application that exceeds a portal limit, remove unnecessary pages first, then try image compression on a copy. Zoom in on names, dates and document numbers. A small file that is unreadable can still be rejected.

Which compression mode keeps selectable text?

Lossless optimization retains text and rewrites object streams. Image compression rasterizes the pages, removing selectable text and interactive elements. Already optimized files may not become smaller.

Why is my PDF the same size after compression?

It may already be optimized or contain image data that lossless mode cannot shrink. The tool returns the original when the attempted result is not smaller. There is no guaranteed reduction percentage.

Can I compress a PDF to exactly 100 KB or 200 KB?

No exact size is guaranteed. Use Target Size PDF when preparing a file for a size-limited portal; it tries image-based compression and reports whether the target was met. Review legibility and the portal rules. For searchable or accessibility-sensitive documents, keep a text-based original.

Does compressing a PDF reduce its quality?

Lossless mode does not change how pages look. Image mode does: lower image quality gives a smaller file but softer text and photos. Zoom in on small print, stamps and signatures before you send the compressed copy.

Where is my document processed?
