About this protect pdf tool

Add AES-256 password encryption locally in a dedicated browser worker. Text, pages, bookmarks and standard forms are retained. Keep your password safe: it is not stored or recoverable here. Existing digital signatures may become invalid.

When to use this tool

Add a password before sharing a PDF that should not be opened freely.

Get started in three steps

  1. Choose your PDF file from your device.
  2. Use a long, unique password of at least 8 characters. The local engine downloads on first use; your PDF and password stay on this device.
  3. Select Protect PDF, review the result and download your file.

A practical example

Protect a copy of a private report with a long unique password. Download the encrypted output, then close and reopen it in a PDF reader to check that it asks for that password.

Check the result

Read the unlocked contents after entering the password and keep a separate original. Deliver the password through an appropriate separate channel; encryption is not control over what an authorized recipient can copy.

If the result is not right

PaperLumo cannot recover a forgotten password. The local engine may need its first-use download; wait for it before processing. Signing and then encrypting can invalidate an existing signature.

No. The password is used locally and is not stored or recoverable here. Keep it separately and securely. Re-encrypting a signed PDF can invalidate the existing signature.

Where is my document processed?

Document processing runs in your browser. This tool does not upload your document for processing. Optional analytics measures visits and tool events only after you allow it; it does not receive your document content or filenames. Read the privacy policy.
